A Fresh Wrap for Rosso Coffee: Why We’re Moving to PCR Bags
As part of our rebrand, we’re giving our coffee a new look—one that reflects not just our dedication to great coffee but also to thoughtful sustainability. Say hello to PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) bags, our next step in packaging.
Why the Switch?
When we started using compostable bags, they felt like the right move. However, we quickly learned about the challenges they pose:
-
Composting Isn’t Simple: Most municipalities don’t fully compost our bags. To do so, you’d need to remove the plastic inner layer first—an extra step that’s tricky and often misunderstood or skipped altogether.
- Recycling Limits: Compostable bags can’t be recycled, and not many areas handle plastic bag recycling well.
To ensure our packaging aligns with our sustainability goals and is practical for our customers, we consulted waste management experts and packaging specialists. After thoughtful consideration, we identified PCR bags as the most sustainable choice for now.
What’s in a PCR Bag?
Our new bags are made with post-consumer recycled materials, blending sustainability with quality. Here’s how they’re layered:
- Outer Layer: PCR-PET (40–60% recycled content)
- Middle Layer: VMPET for durability
- Inner Layer: PCR-LLDPE (80% recycled content)
This means your coffee stays fresh, while the packaging reduces reliance on new plastic.
Why PCR?
Using PCR materials gives old plastics a second life, cutting down on waste and supporting a circular economy. It’s not perfect, but it’s a step closer to aligning our packaging with our values. They are easier to recycle in most settings and help give new life to materials already in circulation. It’s a small but meaningful way to contribute to a more sustainable future.
What’s Next?
Sustainability is always evolving, and we’re here for it. We’re keeping an eye on innovations in packaging, ready to adapt as better solutions emerge. This isn’t the final stop, but it’s a meaningful step forward.
With this change, every bag of coffee you enjoy helps us move toward a better balance between exceptional quality and mindful choices. After all, good coffee should feel good in every way.
