Hunapu refers to coffee small producers that are near the Volcán de Agua and its slopes. Hunapu embraces around 250-350 small producers. The varieties they grow are bourbon, caturra and catuaí. Hunapu is a blend of coffee created at Bella Vista in Guatemala with Rosso via selecting single day pickings. Hunapu is a blend of different small producers who usually own small farms around Antigua.
Cherries are delivered to Bella Vista each day where the coffee is wet processed and fermented for usually 24 hours before it is dried on their massive patio. We've tasted up to 90 different day lots to create this blend year after year.
Hunapu is a community project around Antigua that's made up of smallholder producers. Essentially what that means is a whole bunch of producers will sell their coffee cherries to the same station. Then they'll turn around and sell those to Bella Vista, the mill we work directly with. Bella Vista will then process, dry, mill and export the coffee. It's very traditional in Guatemalan culture to divide your assets up evenly amongst your children in your will. This has lead to farms splitting and shrinking, and thus a lot of producers have very small plots of land and cannot go to market on their own.
